Exploring public perspectives on solar energy adoption in Mexico

Abstract: Solar energy has become increasingly vital in addressing the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, enhancing environmental responsibility, and tackling challenges such as climate change, energy poverty, and sustainable development. While technical and economic aspects have been widely studied, the role of public attitudes, awareness, and perceptions in the adoption of solar initiatives in Mexico remains a crucial yet insufficiently explored area. The objectives of this study are to assess public acceptability for implementing solar energy projects in Mexico, identify factors influencing attitudes, and propose policy recommendations to enhance community engagement. The study utilized a conceptual model and survey data from various cities in Mexico, including Hermosillo, Durango, Mexicali, Puebla, Tijuana, León, and Mexico City. Using Smart PLS software, structural equation modeling was applied to examine the relationships between latent variables. This robust approach provides statistical insights and validates hypotheses regarding public attitudes toward solar energy. The study's results highlight that younger generations and individuals with higher education levels are more inclined to support solar initiatives, underscoring the need for targeted strategies to enhance public acceptance. Key findings also emphasize the critical role of government-provided financial incentives and proactive promotion in fostering trust and encouraging widespread adoption of solar energy projects. By addressing identified barriers, the study offers actionable guidance for policymakers and stakeholders, fostering societal acceptance and advancing Mexico's transition to sustainable energy while mitigating climate change impacts.
