Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2025, vol. 213, issue C

Abstract: Reciprocating compressors are key equipment in process industries. The issue of high energy consumption in compressors has drawn significant attention, with the mismatch between air supply and demand being the primary cause of this high energy consumption. By comparing and analyzing the operating principles and application characteristics of different capacity regulation methods, it is evident that the intake valve stepless capacity regulation technology has a wide adjustment range, good energy-saving effects, and extensive applications. The research provides a comprehensive review of the current research status of the suction valve stepless capacity regulation technology, covering its main forms, system characteristics, structural advantages, and performance benefits. Based on this, the research also analyzes the existing issues related to this technology, introduces emerging technologies in the field of capacity regulation, and discusses future development directions. The aim is to provide a reference for energy-saving, efficiency improvement, and low-carbon development of compressors. The analysis shows that the intake valve stepless capacity regulation technology is primarily implemented through a partial stroke, top-opening regulation system. The essence of this system is hydraulic drive control, which has defects such as small flow areas, large resistance losses, severe impact, complex actuator systems, and multiple failure points. Future research should focus on changes to the valve structure and operating principles, with the rotary cup full-process controllable regulation system expected to be a key focus in the development of capacity regulation technology for compressors.
