Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2025, vol. 219, issue C

Abstract: The large-scale deployment of hydrogen energy is a key pathway to building a renewable energy society. Developing safe, efficient, and low-cost hydrogen storage and transportation technologies is crucial for the widespread adoption of hydrogen energy. Existing hydrogen storage and transportation technologies are energy-intensive and costly, making it difficult to meet the flexible demands of various hydrogen use scenarios. Therefore, this review compares the hydrogen energy roadmaps and strategies of different countries, provides an overview of the current status and technological bottlenecks of various hydrogen storage and transportation methods, and outlines future directions for the development of hydrogen storage and transportation technologies. The results indicated that the development and integration of application scenario-oriented hydrogen storage and transportation technologies is essential for enhancing the energy efficiency of the hydrogen energy chain. In addition, this review provides a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various hydrogen storage technologies across different application scenarios. It also offers valuable insights for policymakers in making decisions on hydrogen storage and transportation development at the regional or industry level, and provides guidance for advancing these technologies to support decarbonization and large-scale applications.
