Biodiesel production potential from oil seeds in Turkey

Abstract: Recent petroleum crises, increasing cost and unavailability of petroleum diesel gave impetus to the search for an alternative fuel. Among the renewable fuels, the ones that are produced from oilseeds and food waste as the sources are favored by the majority of researchers because of their ability to minimize air pollution and emission of greenhouse gases and also to achieve reduction of dependency on fuel import, which result in reducing the overall energy cost. Biodiesel can be considered as the optimum alternative fuel for diesel fuel in Turkey. The biodiesel production potential from oil seeds such as soybean, peanut, sunflower, sesame, safflower, canola, cottonseed, flaxseed, hempseed and poppyseed in Turkey was investigated. Purpose of this study is to examine the potential of biodiesel in Turkey in parallel with global developments and agricultural products used in biodiesel energy production. In the present study, data was received from Turkish Statistical Institute. Around Turkey, 1.17 million ha of land from 81 provinces are predicted to be suitable land for growing of oil seeds. There are approximately 3.31 million tons of oil seed crops in Turkey that can potentially produce 1.12 million tons every year. Furthermore, there are 4.15 million ha fallow land in Turkey. When the production of oil seed crops were realized in these area, approximately 11.74 million tons of seeds can be produced. In Turkey, water is a main problem for growing plants, so that drought-resistant oil seed crops will be produced such as safflower, and poppy seed etc. Based on the results, drought-resistant oil seed crops can be grown in Turkey and these oils can be used in biodiesel production industry.
