Monopolies and the market economy

Bogumil Binczak

Scandinavian Journal of Management, 1992, vol. 8, issue 3, 159-165

Abstract: Ways of preventing the undesirable economic and social effects of monopolization have a long tradition in the world. For example, the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the main Antimonopoly Act in the U.S.A. was in 1990. Yet in Poland this is a new phenomenon. The first legal frameworks were created by the Act of 28 January 1987 for counteracting monopolistic practices in the national economy. This paper describes the scale of monopolization in Polish industry during the transition of Poland's centrally planned economy to a market economy, and discusses possible ways of countering the unfavourable elements in the situation.
