Organizational relics as symbolic resources

Abstract:
This article analyses the role played by the past in the construction of organizational culture. Within this framework the concept of "relics" is introduced. Here the term implies an organizational form with its origins in the pre-industrial period, which has survived the passing of time and now acts as a symbolic level within a contemporary organization. The case of a trade Association in an Italian city and the influence that another organization -- a Renaissance Guild -- holds over its cultural universe is considered. While the Association provides an arena for the political conflict, the Guild provides a symbolic background in terms of tradition and nobility for an élite.
