Recidivism and community adjustment amongst former mental patients

Social Science & Medicine, 1979, vol. 12, issue 1, 17-27
Abstract:
This paper describes a longitudinal study of recidivism in a group of mental patients discharged or otherwise released from a large state hospital. The goal of the study was to identify some of the factors that help and hinder the patients as they attempt to find a viable alternative to rehospitalization in the community. An attempt was made to assess the role of geographical location in the community, and to test the ecological hypothesis that the environmental characteristics of the patients' residential neighborhoods can predict recidivism in the sample. Data to support the hypothesis are discussed and evaluated in the light of other research questions generated by the results of the study.
