Professionals' criteria for accepting people as patients

Social Science & Medicine, 1982, vol. 16, issue 24, 2083-2089
Abstract:
Using interviews with health professionals involved in the care of stroke patients, together with material from other relevant studies, data have been gathered on the criteria professionals use, or say they use, either to accept, reject or refer applicants for their care. Using these data a list of nineteen different criteria has been drawn up. They are divided into the four categories of criteria based on characteristics of the medical condition, of the applicant, of the applicant's environment, and of health service organisation. It is suggested that, given such a variety of grounds, decisions may be difficult to reach and may lead to conflict between professionals or between professionals and their clients. The intention of this article is to outline a framework which highlights some of the important features of medical decision-making and which can be used to develop further research.
