Trajectories of sleep problems and the longitudinal associations with mental health difficulties among Chinese adolescents

Xiaoting Liu

Social Science & Medicine, 2024, vol. 358, issue C

Abstract: Growing research highlights the negative impact of sleep problems on adolescent mental health. However, the developmental trajectory of sleep problems during adolescence and their relationship with mental health difficulties, including both internalizing and externalizing symptoms, remain unclear. Additionally, the direction of the effects between sleep problems and mental health difficulties is not well established. This study aims to identify the developmental trajectories of sleep problems and examine their association with mental health difficulties in both internalizing and externalizing domains.
