Abstract:
Downton (1969), Arnold and Ghosh (1976) and Klebanov (1980) have dealt with certain versions of the integrated Cauchy functional equation to characterize either exponential or geometric distributions. In this short communication revelations are made on these papers, showing, in particular, how the results arrived at therein are linked with the Lau--Rao theorem. Some blemishes existing in these papers, including a major one in Downton (1969), are also pointed out.
