Abstract: The Poisson process may be generalised by an ordinary renewal process with the times between renewals following a gamma distribution. Over- (under-) dispersion of the distribution of the number of renewals relative to the Poisson distribution is the result, according as the coefficient of variation of this gamma distribution is > 1 (
