A recurrence formula for the distribution of the wilcoxon rank sum statistic

Abstract: A recurrence formula for the exact distribution of the Wilcoxon rank sum statistic is obtained using the properties of the binomial coefficients. A geometric interpretation of this distribution based on the structure of the Pascal triangle is presented.
