National water footprints and embodied environmental consequences of major economic sectors-a case study of Japan

Abstract:
Due to the challenges of an increasing planetary temperature and limited natural resources, quantifying anthropogenic pressure on the natural environment is of increasingly great importance. Although “footprint” has been widely discussed for describing certain anthropogenic impacts on the environment, comprehensive analyses of multiple environmental footprints are seldom conducted. Hence, this study tries to evaluate consumption-based footprints covering water, greenhouse gasses, and pollutants by using the environmentally extended input-output table. Taking Japan as an example, six water sources, including potable water, non-potable water, underground water, green water, reclaimed water, and seawater, are thoroughly analyzed to determine the water footprint from production to consumption. In addition, the greenhouse gas footprint and pollutant footprint are also analyzed separately. The comprehensive insights from consumption-based accounting provide another picture of environmental burdens, which will benefit future consumption-based measurements.
