Abstract: •Radiophobia is primarily a social phenomenon as opposed to a purely psychological dynamic.•Radiophobia is an expression of public distrust and a dearth of institutional accountability.•Radiophobia is predicated upon public conceptions of recreancy or the failure of organizational and institutional actors to uphold their obligations to the public.•Socio-technical gridlock necessitates corporate and governmental actors take radiophobia seriously.
