 UK research on implications of information and communication technologiesWilliam H. Melody Telecommunications Policy, 1987, vol. 11, issue 1, 11-19 Abstract: The UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is a body set up by Royal Charter for the promotion of social science research. In August 1985, Council established a major Programme on Information and Communication Technologies (PICT) to examine the important and pervasive long-term societal implications of the new information and communication technologies. It was recognized that technological changes in these major fields are providing a vehicle for fundamental alterations in the structure of economic, social, political and cultural institutions. Without a better understanding of the implications of these changes, both research in other areas (including the physical and engineering sciences) and long-term policy development by government and industry will be seriously disadvantaged. Council's objective is to develop a network of UK researchers and research institutions examining the social science and policy aspects of the information and communication technologies on a continuing basis.
