US--Caribbean telecommunications: Making great strides in development

Abstract: Since an ITU Commission in 1985 urged developing countries to place greater emphasis on telecommunications, many more countries have come to regard this sector as central to their development. The Caribbean region is an area where important steps have been taken. This article examines the opportunities and concerns that have already emerged, looking first at new telecommunications links underway, and then turning to important media-related developments. It concludes that at the same time as plans by US carriers and media companies are a catalyst for Caribbean policy formation, US companies are in continuous need of updated information about the Caribbean, and that planning by both the USA and the Caribbean could benefit by the creation of formal procedures for sharing information and perspectives on US-- Caribbean telecommunications.
