WARC 92 The case for mobile satellites

Abstract: WARC 92 will be a watershed in the telecommunications world. The International Telecommunication Union is charged with regulating the use of the electromagnetic spectrum, a responsibility with increasing importance as a plethora of new mobile, broadcast and other services seek to carve out portions of this finite resource. Mobile satellite services are a relatively small user of spectrum (currently only 63 MHz at L-band), but provide an array of safety-related and other services on a global basis that would not otherwise be possible. Mobile satellite services are on the verge of explosive growth in terms of both number of system operators and overall traffic, and their requirements for additional spectrum must be considered at WARC 92.
