New telecommunication services: Current situation and prospects in Germany

Matthias Stoetzer

Telecommunications Policy, 1994, vol. 18, issue 7, 522-537

Abstract: The significance of a series of new telecommunication services in Germany is investigated in a study of four business sectors conducted in 1992. Overall, it is revealed that the use of new telecommunication services falls short of the forecasts that were made at the end of the 1980s. Across all branches of industry, videotex and online databases are the new telecommunication services that are most widely used. Considerable differences exist between sectors as far as the use of services is concerned. As expected, the financial services sector (banks and insurers) is a principal user group. Measured against the very moderate current significance of many value-added services on average, many enterprises adopt a very positive outlook as regards their future relevance. Electronic banking and electronic data interchange are thought to have the brightest prospects, with at least 10% of all companies in all sectors anticipating a growth in use.
