Mobile satellite communications in developing countries: The role of Inmarsat

Abstract: This Comment is concerned with mobile sateliite communications in developing countries. It begins with a review of the needs of developing countries before briefly describing the services available from Inmarsat, including new services for personal satellite communications. Some examples are given of how those services are being used in developing countries. Some of the key issues affecting the development of mobile satellite services in those countries are highlighted. The concluding section looks at the ways in which Inmarsat is supporting developing countries and the ways that developing countries can influence Inmarsat policies and direction.
