Bottlenecks in pay television. Impact on market development in Europe
Dermot Nolan
Telecommunications Policy, 1997, vol. 21, issue 7, 597-610
Abstract:
This paper describes the bottlenecks in pay-television which are created by a combination of technological, contractual and economic factors interacting in a number of different ways. A brief review is provided of the generic aspects of pay-television systems which are independent of transmission technology choices. The paper then goes on to discuss generic bottlenecks encountered in pay-television. New bottlenecks in digital television systems are also analysed. To illustrate the likely complexities in the digital television industry, the development of digital satellite television in the USA is compared with the situation currently unfolding in Europe.
