Abstract: This article looks at the impact of information technology on society in the Netherlands. A brief description is given of the applications of technology (telecommunications infrastructure, videotex, EFT), an analysis of the public debate taking place in the Netherlands, and an appraisal of government policy with respect to socioeconomics and innovation, microelectronics, and information technology. The authors conclude that the government must play a more active role in raising public awareness of the issues. Future studies should place more emphasis on the social consequences of information technology.
