Impact of residential relocation on activity-travel behaviors between household couples: A case study of Kunming, China

Abstract: Changes in the travel behavior of individuals as outcomes of residential relocation have been extensively analyzed in existing literature. Yet, few studies are concerned with differences and intra-household interactions between household couples in terms of activity-travel adjustments resulting from relocation. Using data from a household activity-travel questionnaire survey in Kunming, China, this study explores changes in activity-travel behaviors at an individual level and examines how these changes differ between male and female heads of household. A structural equations model is used. The results reveal significant changes in individual commuting time and car use for commuting, significant changes in commuting behavior which differ according to the gender of the head of household and which trigger adjustments to housework that are achieved through intra-household interactions between household couples. That said, changes in out-of-home and in-home housework time for both household heads interact with each other: male heads are more likely to adjust their out-of-home housework due to self-commuting time changes; this, in turn, influences out-of-home housework participation among female heads.
