Japan's sustainable transport policy towards the 21st century

Yuji Ono

Transport Policy, 1993, vol. 1, issue 1, 32-42

Abstract: This paper attempts to provide a better understanding of Japan's sustainable transport policy following growing concern over environmental problems and energy issues. Global warming, air pollution caused by NOx, and the energy situation in relation to the transport sector, are analysed. Possible Japanese strategies for the organization of environmentally friendly transportation are suggested. In particular, stress is laid on the formation of efficient transport systems such as the utilization of railway and bus services. The fact that improvement of fuel efficiency and stringent emission controls have not been enough to solve the problems and issues created by steadily increasing transport demands is discussed.
