•We examine gender roles on productivity through two precision farming studies.•Diversification trajectories differ between men and women with the most profitable trajectory controlled by men.•Independent women farmers need equal access to technologies and support.•Gender-based inequalities negatively impact agricultural productivity.•Institutionalizing gender pro-active policies will benefit both women and men.
