Abstract:
The article describes the origins of the Patent Cooperation Treaty and its evolution since it entered into force in 1978. The increasing success of the system is charted, with applications reaching almost 10 000 in 1987, and the basic features of the process of application and publication are briefly described. The problem of the rapid increase in the total number of patent documents published during the last 10-20 years, and the offsetting effects of regional and international arrangements, is outlined.
