The progress of automation at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Abstract: The paper discusses the progress achieved in the last few years by the USPTO in its automation program. The patent text search system is the most advanced part of the APS (Automated Patent System), the database including the text of all US patents issued since 1970 and English language abstracts of all Japanese published applications from 1980. The patent image system is in operation for three of the 16 examination groups at the USPTO and is recording the images of all additional patents in the search file. The patent application management system is purely in the development stage. The plans for near term enhancements of the system in the period 1992-1995 are outlined.
