Political issues surrounding the public/private sector debate in the patent information area

Abstract: The article outlines the situation as it has existed to the present in the supply of information in the patent information area, where the patent offices have broadly supplied basic data and the private services have provided value-added data, and questions whether it is wise for the patent offices to venture into supplying value added information services at much reduced prices due to their advantageous position in holding the basic information. It argues that the basic information should be made available to commercial services at rates which are not prohibitive and enables them to provide services which are of great importance to the profession as a whole.
