Patent literature -- a tool for forecasting in the pharmaceutical industry?

Abstract:
Technological forecasting based on patents in the pharmaceutical field appears to be feasible by correlating the respective basic patents with the market shares of the applicants, and thereafter by taking the more important patent family cases as indicators for the future new products to appear on the market.
