CAS patent information: then and now

Eric Shively and Jan Williams

World Patent Information, 2004, vol. 26, issue 1, 57-59

Abstract: Patent information has always been an integral part of the services provided by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) to the scientific and technical information community. In this article, the authors trace the development of CAS, particularly over the period of publication of World Patent Information, from 1979. They highlight those aspects of most relevance to the patent information community. Topics covered include the partially electronic but mainly paper-based system in 1979, the introduction of CAS ONLINE, the development of the host STN, the expanding extent and depth of patent coverage, and the increasing shift to electronic processing and delivery of services and to the provision of end-user-orientated services. They conclude that, although the fundamental purpose of CAS--to connect scientists with the work of their colleagues--has remained constant, the scope of this mission has expanded in keeping with the interdisciplinary character of research in the 21st century.
