The process of reforming the International Patent Classification

Abstract:
The reform of the International Patent Classification (IPC) to provide a more efficient and effective system has been taking place since 1998 and is now largely complete. The author reviews the reasons for and progress of the reform and describes procedures for its implementation and the structure of the reformed classification system. Specific topics covered include the core and advanced levels, reclassification of patent collections to the current version of the IPC, the additional information in the electronic version, the principles and rules of the reformed IPC, the Master Classification Database (MCD), and aspects of the information technology support for the IPC, such as automated assistance in applying classification symbols and multilingual access.
