Recent developments in the British patent classification for improved dissemination of information on uses, applications and utilities of inventions

Abstract: The article contrasts the information needs of Patent Offices and industrial users in relation to the patent literature and describes an additional facility for the British Classification Key, operable from 1 January 1983, designed to meet the needs of industrial users whose interest centre on particular end-uses of inventions rather than the functional nature of inventions themselves. The facility takes the form of indexing schedules for recording uses and applications of inventions, and utilities and properties of new materials. The way in which the schedules will be applied by the Office is described and their potential use for searching is considered.
