Abstract:
Since 1983 the three Patent Offices representing the industrially most developed areas of the world have been engaged in a programme of active co-operation. The resulting projects concern the internal activities of application processing, searching and substantive examination; many involve the application of Information Technology in the automation of these activities. The databases produced by the projects will become available to the public, subject to agreements which are being negotiated between the offices involved. The cooperative developments between the three Offices (to be outlined in this article) can now be seen to be bearing fruit following the signing in Tokyo, at the close of the latest Trilateral Conference on 14-15 October 1985, of the Third Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), by the Heads of the three Offices, Donald J. Quigg for the USPTO, Michio Uga for the JPO and the author for the EPO. An extension of cooperation to the field of automatic translation (Project No. 13) was also agreed in the latest MOU.
