Generic chemical structures in patents (Markush structures): The research project at the University of Sheffield

Abstract:
The provision of graphic retrieval facilities for the generic chemical structures which are especially characteristic of chemical patents call for more than simple extensions to the technology which already exists for searching files of specific chemical substances. A research project in progress at Sheffield University has brought novel insights to the understanding of generic substance representations, and their translation into a variety of forms suitable for storage and search.
