Abstract:
High-skill workers play a central role in both the knowledge economy and cross-country labour mobility. The number of international migrants with a tertiary education has more than doubled in the last two decades. The present study uses world-wide individual level migration data and estimates econometrically to what extent high-skill international migration contributes to the knowledge creation in destination countries, as well as to the knowledge diffusion worldwide. Our result suggest that the role of international high-skill migrants is substantial both ion the knowledge creation and knowledge diffusion.
