The Ways Cigarettes Contribute to GNP
John Slade
Eastern Economic Journal, 1987, vol. 13, issue 4, 353-359
Abstract:
Industry-sponsored analyses of the economic contribution which the cigarette makes to GNP overlook a large proportion of the economic activity generated by this product. Conversely, analyses by public health advocates minimize the positive contributions the product makes to the economy. A combined approach is suggested which also includes a number of items not measured by either conventional method, namely, the goods and services which support cigarette consumption, the costs of fires caused by cigarettes, and the additional need for fire protection which currently available cigarettes impose on society.
