Abstract: The measure of personal autonomy and individual rights is one of the measures of democracy. This study 1) examines the relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and personal freedoms in the member countries of the European Union (EU) and 2) compares the overall GDP and personal autonomy and individual freedoms in the EU pre and post the accession of several (mainly post communist) countries into the EU in 2005. The purpose of this paper is to show whether there is a causal relationship between GDP and personal autonomy and individual rights in the member states of the European Union and therefore a causal relationship between GDP and democracy. The independent variable is GDP per capita and the dependent variable is personal autonomy and individual rights. The thesis of this research is that the lower the country’s GDP, the higher the probability of personal autonomy and individual rights problems and the lower the level of democracy.
