Classical Liberalism in the Czech Republic

Abstract: In this article we treat the cultural and intellectual life of liberalism in the Czech Republic, as opposed to the policy record, and report especially on recent history. We especially treat economists and economic thought. Liberalism in the Czech Republic traces its roots in the pre-World War II period. We describe its suffering during oppressive regimes of national and international socialism, and we analyze reasons for its unique influence after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. A special focus is devoted to the activities of Czech economic reformers in the early 1990s and, down to today, think-tanks and several universities in advancing liberal values and ideas, again with an emphasis on economics.
