On the Origins and Normative Status of the Impartial Spectator

Abstract:
While it is clear that the impartial spectator functions as Adam Smith’s theory of conscience, it is unclear how Smith understands both the origins and the normative status of the concept of the impartial spectator. I map out possible interpretations of Smith on both of these issues.
