The System of Payment Settlements in the European Union

Abstract: This article is concerned with the problems of the system of payment settlements in the European Union. This system is significant for adaptation of the settlement systems in Poland within the context of the forthcoming entry of Poland into the European Union. The article brings closer the following problems concerning large-quota payment settlements TARGET: the origin and rise of the system, the principles of its functioning, criteria of participation, the structure, payment flows and the challenges standing before the system. In the end the perspectives of integration of the Polish settlement systems with the TARGET system were signalled.
