Abstract: Given the growing importance of the service sector in the European economy, the present article analyses the role played by this sector in regional development within the EEC. The article begins with a survey of the evolution of the different service branches -in terms of employment and gross added value- and of the changes in their location patterns within the EEC, with special emphasis on financiar services. An examination is then made on the impact of technological change on services and how this affects location patterns. Finally, after discussing the present state of integration of service markets in the EEC, the article analyses the regional impact to be expected from a Single Services Market in 1992.
