Abstract: Following an opening survey of the major economic indicators of domestic commerce in the Basque Autonomous Community, this article uses information contained in the 1987 Census of Commercial Establishments to analyse the situation today and questions the capacity of the region to meet the major challenges posed by full integration into the EEC-increased productivity and a stable, or even improved, share in the market.
