Abstract: Because it is the intermediary between individuals with savings and those who require funds, and because of its role in guaranteeing that the system of payments will work and that the economic policy will continue to deal with excess liquidity, the banking system is destined to play an important role in helping the country meet the challenge of the EEC in 1993. In this article, Javier Maqueda and Antonio Roldán make an assessment of the present state of private banks and savings banks in the Basque Autonomous Community and offer an evaluation of the effort these organisations have made to ready themselves for the economic realities of the future.
