Abstract:
The restructuring of the International Economic System has provoked a redefinition of the Territorial Systems of Western Europe. One of the more obvious effects was the shaping of an area in decline throughout the Atlantic Axis in which the North of Spain is inserted. The crisis which has affected basic economic functions, made one of the most dynamic and expansive City Systems in the Spanish Urban network, the Rasque-Peripheral system, enter a stage of involution. Consequently, the Central Areas lost their capacity for diffusion, the Peripheral Areas were desarticulated or disconnected, and some inland areas which had operated beforehands as semiperipheral spaces, are now Dynamic Sub-centres. As the functional change affected regional industries more, the dynamism was transferred especially to the new Metropolitan Corridor on the Coast of Galicia, the potencial of which is linked to activities deriving from the primary sector and tourism. The need to connect this macro-regional space through a network with a modern infrastructure, is an essential condition for a Regional Development Policy which takes the new parameters into account.
