Abstract: Fishing and its future are a constant theme in the history of our people. In a continual acceptance of prevailing situations, the Basque fishing sector and its men, continue to exercise the economic activity of which it is master and pioneer. The Treaty of Utrecht in the XVIII century, the extension of the 200-mile limit, and the Treaty of Adhesion to the E.E.C. itself, are important milestones wich have not always been good for the sector. The coming into effect of the Single European Act together with the Common Fishing Policy are, the most important challenges for the Basque fishing fleet. The spirit of the factors which make up the sector, the conjunction of economic-political interests and the determined aid of the Government, are the keys of new and adventurous actions, in spite of the fact that the sea is and will always continue to be hard.
