Abstract: This article analyses the complex situation of the milk industry in its widest context, including its relations with the productiva sector and distribution. The main points dealt with are the situation and prospects for production and the price of dairy milk, the main input of the milk industry, the characteristics of the latter (dimension, concentration, specialisation), its productions and specific problems, consumption and its tendencias, as well as foreign trade. By means of the description of these variables the intention is to situate Spanish milk industry in general, and the Basque industry in particular, within the framework of the E.E.C., underlying the differential aspects of the community industry. In addition, an assessment of the prospects for the sector at a general level and for the Basque Country is made.
