Abstract: The need for adaptation to a European environmental standard, as a previous step towards real competitiveness in the industrial sector, makes it necessary to consider integral environmental management. Within this context, the limitation of atmospheric emissions involves, among other alternativas, the use of control systems, the choice of which is determined, not only by technical requirements, but, to a great extent, by economic factors. The final choice is determined, normally, by the possibility for equipment to meet emission regulations at the lowest cost. It is necessary, therefore, to analyse the different components which affect the cost of environmental improvements, produced by the use of control equipment, considering each of these within an overall assessment.
