Abstract: This paper describes the means and goals of European technology policy on the basis of the preferences revealed in the current Framework Programme for Research and Development. The first part of the paper presents the basic principles guiding Community technology policy and comments on their economic rationale. Then, the priorities in R and the contents of the main programmes which develop the III Framework Programme are describes. Finally, the main guide-lines of the new strategy of the European technology policy are presentes.
