Abstract: This paper examines two questions connected with the current account deficit during 1988-1992. The first one refers to the solvency and sustainability of the current external situation; the paper holds the view that the current account deficit can only be sustained if the retative net inflow of long run foreign investment is manteined. In the second part of the article some ultimate determinants of competitiveness are discussed.
