Abstract: This paper reviews the empirical evidence available about the effect of price variation on health-care demand and expenditure. Expenditure on odontology, medicines and health insurance premlums is analyzed. The efficiency o measures aimed at introducing some form of patient contribution towards the cost of health services is being discussed in a double framework: on the one hand theoretical, and on the other empirical, however using evidence which is not very relevant to our immediate situation. In order to quantify precisely the magnitude of the effects of price variation, the authors opt for establishing specific studies using experimetal desings allowing them to measure in more detail the advantages and disadvantages of these measures as well as the distribution of their effects.
