Abstract:
This article describes mobility patterns among market-leading firms and specifies procedures for the appraisal thereof, applying such procedures to Spanish industry over the 1982-1992 period in over thirty branches of activity. The results show an important and revealing increase in rivalry among big corporations, which reflects a parallel general increase in competition. This phenomenon is not uniform and has different characteristics from one industrial sector to another. The study also shows there is no relation between patterns of competition and market structure configuration. Such patterns of competition, with a few exceptions, have hardly altered the balance between leading companies. Finally, the author advances a hypothesis according to which mobility has been determinad by the processes of internal deregulation and external liberalization of the Spanish economy.
